When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, enough adult teeth have come in for Dr. Bonebreak to spot developing issues—often before they become more complex and costly to treat.

An early evaluation doesn't mean early treatment. It means we have the information to make the best decision for your child's unique needs.

Signs to Watch For

Consider scheduling an evaluation if you notice any of the following:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing or snoring
  • Thumb or finger sucking past age 5
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Jaws that shift, pop, or seem uneven
  • Speech difficulties

Even if none of these apply, an age-7 checkup gives families peace of mind that their child's smile is developing on track.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Visit

Your child's first consultation is completely free, relaxed, and designed to be a positive experience. Here's what happens:

1

Friendly Welcome

We make sure your child feels comfortable and at ease from the moment you walk in.

2

Comprehensive Exam

Dr. Bonebreak evaluates your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite with a gentle, thorough examination.

3

Digital Imaging

If needed, we take low-radiation digital X-rays to see what’s happening beneath the surface.

4

Discussion & Plan

We explain our findings in plain language and discuss whether treatment is needed now, later, or not at all.

You'll leave with a clear understanding of your child's orthodontic health—and a plan, whether that means starting treatment or simply keeping an eye on things.

Interceptive Treatment (Phase 1)

Interceptive orthodontics—also called Phase 1 treatment—is used only when necessary to guide proper growth while your child is still developing. This proactive approach can:

  • Create space for incoming adult teeth
  • Correct jaw growth or bite issues early
  • Address crossbites, crowding, or spacing
  • Reduce the risk of extractions or surgery later
  • Guide proper facial development

Common Phase 1 appliances include palatal expanders, space maintainers, limited braces, and habit appliances. Treatment typically lasts 6 to 12 months.

Two-Phase Treatment: The Big Picture

Some children benefit from a two-phase approach:

Phase 1 (Ages 7–10)

Address specific developmental issues early—like jaw alignment, crossbites, or severe crowding—while growth is on our side.

Phase 2 (Ages 11–14+)

Comprehensive treatment with braces or Invisalign once all adult teeth are in, building on the foundation Phase 1 created.

Not every child needs two phases. Many children do beautifully with a single phase of comprehensive treatment in their teen years. Dr. Bonebreak will always recommend the simplest, most effective path.

Common Questions from Parents

Does my child need braces right now?

Not necessarily. Many children we see at age 7 simply need monitoring. We only recommend treatment when it’s truly beneficial—never before your child is ready.

Will early treatment hurt?

Early orthodontic appliances are designed to be gentle. Most children adjust within a few days and experience minimal discomfort.

How long does Phase 1 treatment take?

Typically 6 to 12 months, depending on the specific concern being addressed. We’ll give you a clear timeline before starting.

Is the first consultation really free?

Yes. Children’s consultations at NorthStar are completely free with no obligation. We believe every child deserves access to an expert evaluation.

What if you recommend waiting?

We’ll place your child in our complimentary growth monitoring program. We’ll check in periodically at no charge until the ideal time for treatment.
